In brief

  • Leave. Annual leave: the Labour Act sets a minimum of six working days after twelve months. Most clients give fifteen to twenty.
  • Probation. Put the probation period in writing, usually three to six months, with a review meeting at the end.
  • HMO. Staff value HMO cover more than a small pay rise. Basic plans start around N6,500 per head monthly (example).
  • Exit. Always pay final entitlements promptly and issue a letter of service. It prevents most disputes.
  • Records. Keep personnel files for at least six years after a staff member leaves.
  • Overtime. Agree overtime rules in contracts. Factory clients usually pay time and a half on weekdays.

Most HR trouble in small firms is not dramatic. It is a missing letter, a late remittance, a promise nobody wrote down.
