For families, 6 minute read

Having the conversation with a parent

How to start talking about a move, what to avoid, and why the first answer is usually no.

A grandmother reading quietly

Start early, start small

The best conversations happen before a crisis. Begin with what your parent enjoys and what worries them, not with a brochure.

Listen for the real worry

Behind a no there is usually something specific: losing independence, the cost, being forgotten, leaving a house full of memories. Name it and talk about it.

Offer a trial

A visit for lunch, or a two week respite stay, lets a parent decide from experience rather than imagination.

Involve the whole family

Siblings abroad, the pastor or imam, an old friend. Decisions made together are kept together.

Let them lead

Wherever possible, the person moving should choose the home, the room and what comes with them.

Our family liaison team talks families through this every week. Call us, there is no charge.
