A teaching laboratory in Surulere for pharmacy students

Our old stockroom on Adeniran Close is now a teaching laboratory, open to pharmacy students from three Lagos universities every week of term.

When the trade desk moved stock out to Sagamu, we were left with an empty room behind the Surulere pharmacy. Dr Folake Adeyemi, who opened the first Lumen pharmacy in that building in 1998, had one idea for it: teach.

The new teaching laboratory has twelve benches, a fume cupboard, analytical balances and a small dissolution tester. Students come in groups of twelve on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, led by scientists from Ibadan on rotation.

Sessions follow the work our own laboratory does: identity tests, content measurement and simple stability checks. Students also spend an hour at the pharmacy counter with a Lumen pharmacist.

We built it because the gap between a pharmacy degree and a first job is too wide. Students who come through the laboratory are invited to apply for the graduate pharmacist programme with a guaranteed interview.

Universities can book term places through the contact page. There is no charge to students.
