Three quick sums worth doing tonight
A retirement income gap, an emergency fund sized for Lagos life, and school fees abroad in naira. Each uses example rates and takes a minute.
Assumes 12% inflation, a 16% example rate before retirement and drawing 8% of the pot a year after. Example rates for illustration only. They are not promised returns: investments can fall as well as rise, and past performance is not a guide to the future.
Keep it in a money market fund or Treasury bills you can reach within days, not in shares.
Fees assumed to rise 4% a year in dollars. Exchange rates are examples, not forecasts. Example rates for illustration only. They are not promised returns: investments can fall as well as rise, and past performance is not a guide to the future.
A number is a beginning
These calculators give you a first, honest number. They cannot see your tax position, your pension details, your other goals or the way your income may grow. That is what the review is for.
If a result looks frightening, do not panic. Large numbers usually mean starting earlier, stretching the date or combining goals, and an adviser can show you the trade-offs side by side.
- Run the numbers again each year
- Keep emergency money separate from goal money
- Plan dollar costs in dollars where you can
Calculator questions
Why 8% drawdown in retirement?
It is an example used for illustration with naira assets. In a plan we test lower and higher figures and look at what happens in bad years.
Should my emergency fund be in dollars?
Usually some of it in naira, because most emergencies are paid in naira. A dollar slice can make sense if you have dollar costs.
Can I save the results?
Take a screenshot, or use the goal planner and send your plan to an adviser.
Start with a planning review
Sixty minutes with an adviser at our Ajah office or on a video call. We look at your goals, your cash flow and what you already own, then write it up. The N25,000 review fee comes off your plan fee if you go ahead.
