Blood count and typep. 04
The most requested test we run. A small blood sample gives counts of red cells, white cells and platelets, plus haemoglobin, read on a haematology analyser and reviewed by a scientist.
What it measuresp. 05
A full blood count, often called an FBC, counts the main types of cells in your blood. Red cells carry oxygen, white cells are part of the immune system and platelets help blood clot.
Alongside the counts, the analyser measures haemoglobin and the size of red cells. Together these give a doctor a broad picture used in routine checks and when looking into tiredness or infection.
A blood film may be added if the analyser flags something unusual. A scientist then looks at the cells under a microscope; this is included in the price.
Preparingp. 06
Not needed. Eat and drink as normal.
Take your usual medicines unless your doctor says otherwise. Tell the phlebotomist if you take blood thinners.
Any slot works. If you are also having a fasting test, choose a slot before 9am.
Wear a top with loose sleeves. The draw takes about two minutes.
Reading the reportp. 07
Your report lists each measurement with a reference range. A value outside the range is flagged H or L. A flag is not a diagnosis; ranges vary with age, sex, pregnancy and other factors, so please discuss results with your doctor.
| Measurement | Unit | Typical adult reference range (example) |
|---|---|---|
| Haemoglobin | g/dL | Women 12.0 to 15.5, men 13.5 to 17.5 |
| White cell count | 10⁹/L | 4.0 to 11.0 |
| Platelets | 10⁹/L | 150 to 400 |
| Red cell count | 10¹²/L | Women 3.8 to 5.2, men 4.5 to 5.9 |
| Haematocrit | % | Women 36 to 46, men 41 to 53 |
Example ranges for this demo. Your report shows the ranges for the method and analyser used.
When people ask for it
Doctors often request an FBC as part of a general check, before surgery, or alongside other tests when someone feels unwell.
It is also part of our essential wellness and pre-employment panels.
Questionsp. 08
One small tube, about 3 ml.
Yes. Our phlebotomists are trained to collect from children; a parent stays with them throughout.
We report the numbers and flags. If a result is in a critical range we call you and your doctor the same day. What results mean for you is for your doctor to explain.
