The labp. 32

Inside the lab on 3rd Avenue.

Four benches, one quality system and a team of licensed scientists. Every result is checked by a person before it leaves the building.

Four sections

Haematology

Blood counts, films, genotype and blood group, with a scientist reviewing every flagged film.

Clinical chemistry

Sugars, lipids, kidney and liver tests on an automated analyser with two daily control runs.

Immunoassay

Thyroid, hormones, vitamin D and tumour markers, run in morning batches.

Microbiology

Cultures from urine and swabs, read over two to three days.

Sample reception

Every sample is scanned, checked and temperature logged on arrival.

Power and cold chain

Grid, solar and generator with automatic switching, so fridges and analysers never go off.

Qualityp. 34

Nothing leaves until the controls pass.

Every morning each analyser runs known control samples before any patient sample. If a control falls outside its limits, the bench stops, the cause is fixed and the controls are run again. Only then do patient samples run.

Several times a year we also test unknown samples sent by an external quality assessment scheme, and compare our results with laboratories across the country. Results and any actions are reviewed by the director.

Every report is checked by a licensed medical laboratory scientist. Critical values are phoned through before the report is released.

Who handles your sample

Young lab scientist with braided hair smiling
Dr Amina YusufLaboratory director
Medical laboratory scientist with a doctorate in clinical chemistry. Leads quality and signs off new methods.
Scientist examining a small sample
Chukwudi NnajiHead of haematology
Runs the haematology bench and the blood film review rota.
Scientist in a lab coat at a microscope
Rukayat BelloMicrobiology lead
Leads cultures and the infection screening bench.

Our phlebotomists are the first scientists in the chain. A badly drawn sample cannot be fixed later, however good the analyser.

Licencesp. 36

Registered and inspected

Helix Biolabs is a licensed medical laboratory, registered with the relevant regulators and inspected on schedule. Registration numbers are shown on every report. Example details for this demo.

Our scientists hold current practising licences, renewed each year with continuing education. Phlebotomists complete our own training and supervised collections before they work alone.
