The thyroid gland in your neck makes hormones that help set the pace of the body. TSH is the signal from the brain that tells the thyroid how hard to work; free T4 and free T3 are the hormones themselves.
Doctors usually look at all three together, because the pattern between them matters more than any single number.
We run thyroid tests on an immunoassay analyser in batches each morning, which is why results take two working days.
