Written by the Avenor clinical team. General information, not a diagnosis. If you are worried, speak to a doctor.
Most women book their first antenatal visit between eight and twelve weeks of pregnancy. It is the longest visit you will have with us, usually about two hours, because it sets up everything that follows.
You meet a midwife who will be one of a small team caring for you. She asks about your health, any earlier pregnancies and your family history, and takes your blood pressure, weight and a urine sample.
You have blood tests for your blood group, genotype, blood count and infections, and an ultrasound scan to check how many weeks pregnant you are. A doctor reviews everything with you before you leave.
In short
What to remember.
Book between 8 and 12 weeks
Earlier is fine if you have any worries.
Allow two hours
It is the longest visit, so eat something before you come.
Bring your partner if you like
Partners are welcome at every antenatal visit.
Leave with a written plan
Every date, scan and phone number in one place.
More detail
You go home with a written plan: when your next visits are, when your scans are, and the numbers to call day or night. If anything needs closer watching, we invite you to the high risk pregnancy clinic on Thursdays.
The booking visit costs ₦20,000 at our example rate. Many women then choose the antenatal care package at ₦180,000, which covers all routine visits and two further scans. Many HMOs cover antenatal care, sometimes after a waiting period.
