Carpets, humidity and the Lagos rainy season

Wool loves a humid city more than you might think. Three habits keep moth and mildew away through the wettest months.

Why wool copes

Wool can hold about a third of its weight in moisture without feeling wet, and it gives it back slowly as the air dries. That makes it one of the best fibres for a city that moves between air conditioned rooms and wet season afternoons.

Habit one: let it breathe

Do not lay a carpet on a floor that has just been mopped. Give tiles an hour to dry. Under heavy furniture, lift the corners once a month so air reaches the back.

Habit two: light and movement

Moths love dark, still, undisturbed places, such as under a sofa that never moves. Vacuum under furniture every few weeks, and turn the carpet twice a year.

Habit three: never store it damp

If you roll a carpet away, roll it clean and dry, pile side in, wrapped in cotton or paper, never plastic. Plastic traps moisture and invites mildew.

When to call us

A musty smell, a white bloom on the back, or small bald patches near the edges all need attention. Send us a photo; most problems caught early are simple to fix.

Our wash house can take a carpet in the morning and tell you by the evening whether it needs anything more than a wash.
