The brief
Adaobi and Seun had just moved into their first flat in Lekki Phase 1. They wanted one good carpet for the sitting room, something they would still love in thirty years, and they had saved N4,000,000 for it.
The first visit
They spent two hours in the gallery and fell for a silk. It was beautiful and well over budget, and it was also wrong for a room where friends gather every Sunday. We said so.
The home trial
We took three carpets to the flat: a Heriz, a garden carpet and a bold kilim. They lived with them over a weekend, through a Sunday lunch for twelve.
The choice
They chose the Heriz, about fifty years old, rust and indigo, for N3,600,000. It took the lunch, a spilled bowl of stew and a toddler without complaint.
What they would tell a friend
Buy for the room you have and the life you live in it. Try it at home. And ask what the back looks like.
