Size guide and room planner
The right size leaves the floor a frame
Draw your room, try standard sizes and see the border of floor that is left. Most rooms want 30 to 60 cm of floor showing around the carpet.

Scene 02Rules of thumb
Six rules we use every day
- 01
Leave a frame of floor
30 to 60 cm of floor around the carpet in most rooms. In a very large room, up to 90 cm.
- 02
Front legs on
In a sitting room, at least the front legs of every sofa and chair should rest on the carpet so the group feels joined.
- 03
Chairs stay on
Under a dining table, add 60 to 70 cm beyond the table on every side so chairs stay on the carpet when pulled back.
- 04
Beds take two thirds
Under a bed, let the carpet start a third of the way up the bed and reach 50 cm or more beyond each side.
- 05
Runners stop short
A runner should leave 10 to 15 cm of floor at each end of a hall, and clear doors that open inwards.
- 06
Mind the door sweep
Check that doors clear the pile. A thick gabbeh may need a door trimmed by 5 mm; we can arrange a carpenter.

Scene 05Questions
About sizing
My room is an odd shape. Can you help?
Yes. On a home trial our crew measures the room and suggests sizes. For L shaped rooms we often use two carpets that speak to each other.
Can a carpet be cut to size?
Kilims and new carpets can sometimes be shortened and rebound. We do not cut vintage or antique carpets.
Round or rectangle?
A round carpet suits a round table or a square room with a central light. We have about thirty in the gallery.
What about thickness and doors?
Most of our carpets are 6 to 10 mm with underlay. Long pile gabbehs reach 18 mm. We check doors on the home trial.
Let us measure for you
On a home trial our crew measures every room and lays the sizes you are unsure of, so you can see them, not imagine them.
