Getting your child ready for a hospital stay

Talk about it early

Tell your child a few days before, in simple words: where they are going, why, and that you will be there. Younger children need less notice; teenagers need more.

Pack together

Let your child choose what to bring: a favourite toy, pyjamas, a book, a charger. Having a say helps them feel in control.

Brave is not the same as not crying. Every child gets a sticker.

Be honest about the hard bits

If there will be a needle, say so, and that it will be quick and you will hold their hand. Our play specialists can show them the equipment first.

On the ward

A parent sleeps beside every child. Bring your own medicines, phone charger and something to read. The nurses will show you the kitchen and showers on the first night.

In short

  • We are open

    The children’s emergency never closes.

  • Write it down

Note times, temperatures and drinks. It helps the doctor.
