Fever is a sign, not an illness

A fever is the body’s way of fighting an infection, and most fevers in children are caused by common viruses that pass in a few days. In Calabar, malaria is also a common cause, which is why we test for it quickly.

What you can do at home

Offer drinks often, dress your child in light clothes and let them rest. A fever medicine made for children can make them more comfortable; follow the dose on the pack for their age and weight, and never give more often than it says.

You will never be turned away for coming in too soon. That is what we are here for.

When to call us

Call if the fever lasts more than two days, if your child is not drinking well, or if you simply feel something is not right. You know your child best.

When to come straight in

Any fever in a baby under three months. A child who is very sleepy or hard to wake, struggling to breathe, has a fit, or has a rash that does not fade when pressed. Come to the children’s emergency at any hour.
