The move-in checklist

What to bring, what to leave at home and what Westbrook already provides. Written by the people who watch 600 students move in every September.

Already in your room

Every Westbrook room comes with a new mattress and pillow, a desk and chair, a wardrobe that locks, curtains or blinds, a ceiling fan, an air conditioner and at least four sockets per person. The kitchen has cookers, fridges, a microwave and a kettle point on each floor. You do not need a generator, a stabiliser, a gas cylinder or a water drum. Leave them at home.

Bring these

  • Two sets of bedsheets and a light duvet for air-conditioned nights
  • A bucket and a small basin, because some habits are worth keeping
  • Plates, a cup, a spoon and one good pot with a lid
  • A padlock for your locker if you are in a quad pod
  • An extension box with surge protection for your desk
  • Your admission letter, two passport photos and a copy of your guarantor form

Leave these behind

Hot plates, immersion heaters and candles are not allowed in rooms for fire safety. Large speakers will make you unpopular on a quiet floor. Most students also over-pack clothes; wardrobes are generous, but not that generous.

On the day itself

Book a move-in window so cars do not queue on the road. Arrive with the student, meet the resident assistant, and walk the room together for the move-in report. Take photos of anything already scratched. Then go and buy groceries at Sangotedo market before the evening rush.
