About
Started by a nurse who wanted to bring her mother home
Safehands began in 2017 when our founder, a ward nurse in Uyo, could not find trusted help for her own mother after a stroke. Today the team supports families across Akwa Ibom.
Our story
Small enough to know every family
After twenty years on hospital wards, our founder Mrs Edidiong Bassey (example) saw the same story again and again: a parent ready to go home, a family who loved them, and nobody to help in the long days between hospital visits.
She started with three caregivers she had trained herself and her mother as the first client. The rules from that first year still hold: the same faces each week, a nurse who checks in, and a family that always knows what happened today.
We have grown slowly on purpose. Each supervising nurse leads a team of no more than twelve caregivers, so no family becomes a number.
What we believe
Four promises we can keep
We will never promise to cure anyone. These we can promise.
We fit the person's routines, food, faith and family, not the other way round.
You hear what happened today, good or difficult, in plain words.
A lead caregiver and one relief, introduced before the first shift.
You stay in charge. We advise and you decide.
Standards
How we hold ourselves to account
- Registered with the state as a home care provider (example registration for this demo)
- Nurses hold current licences, checked every year
- Every complaint answered within two working days by the director
- An annual family survey, with the results shared with every family
- Insurance for public liability and for caregivers' work in the home
Start with a free assessment visit
A senior nurse comes to the home, meets the person you care for and the family, and talks through what would help. There is no charge within Uyo and no obligation.
