Power is useful and dangerous
Stay safe around power.
Electricity does not give second chances. Here are the rules our own crews live by, and what to do if something goes wrong near you.
At home
Five rules
Never touch a fallen cable
Assume every cable is live. Keep 10 metres away and call us.
Keep kites and ladders clear
Stay well away from overhead lines, especially in the rains.
Do not build under lines
Buildings must keep their distance from high-voltage lines. Ask us before you build.
Use a licensed electrician
Bad wiring causes most house fires. Ask for a certificate.
Switch off before you clean
Water and electricity never mix.
Our crews
How we work safely
Every job starts with a permit, a lock on the switch and a test that the line is dead. Two people on every job, always.
Schools
Safety talks
Our engineers visit primary and secondary schools across our towns with a short safety talk and a demonstration board. Book one through the contact page; it is free.
Questions
Safety
My neighbour is tapping power illegally. What do I do?
Report it in confidence through the contact page. Illegal connections cause fires and outages for the whole street.
Who do I call about a burning transformer?
The AI line first, then the fire service. Do not try to put it out with water.
