Division: Crops

Maize, cassava and rice, planted to the rains.

The crops division plants about 1,840 hectares a year: maize twice where the land allows, cassava on a twelve month cycle and rice in the river valley paddies.

  • 1,840 hectares
  • 3 crops
  • 2 maize seasons

How we work

Planted to a calendar, not to luck

Every block has a plan that starts in December: soil test, lime if needed, ridges or flat beds, and a planting window tied to the first reliable rains. Our field officers log rainfall daily on every site, and the planting crews move when the soil has held water for three days in a row.

  • Soil tested on every block every two years
  • Improved, certified maize seed and disease free cassava stems
  • Weeding done by hand and with light machines, never by blanket spraying
  • Yields logged per block and shared with outgrowers

Through the year

Crops in four seasons

Harmattan

Clear, plough and ridge. Compost from the poultry houses goes out onto the maize blocks.

First rains

Early maize sown, then cassava stems on ridges as soon as the soil holds water.

Long rains

Rice transplanted into the paddies. Weeding and the second fertiliser round on maize.

Harvest

Rice cut and threshed, second maize harvested, cassava lifted for the mill.

The process

Step by step

  1. Prepare

Soil test, lime and compost, then ridges for cassava and flat beds for maize.

  2. Plant

Maize at 75 by 25 cm, cassava stems at one metre, rice seedlings at 20 cm spacing.

  3. Tend

Two weeding rounds, fertiliser split in two, and scouting for fall armyworm every week.

  4. Harvest

Maize dried to 13 percent moisture, rice threshed the same day, cassava to the mill within 24 hours.

Questions

About crops

Do you sell seed or stems?

Yes, to outgrowers first and to other farmers when we have surplus. Cassava stems are sold in bundles of 50 from April.

Is your maize genetically modified?

No. We plant improved open pollinated and hybrid varieties approved for Nigeria, none of them genetically modified.

Can you farm my land for me?

We run a small contract farming service for landowners within 30 km of the estate. Ask the sales team.

How do you handle fall armyworm?

Weekly scouting, early hand removal, and a targeted approved treatment only when a block passes a set threshold.
