Journal: Aligners

Caring for your aligners, day to day

Aligners only work while you wear them, and they stay clear only if you look after them. Here are the habits our patients find easiest to keep.

Wear time comes first

Aim for about 22 hours a day. That leaves time for meals and brushing, and not much else. A simple trick is to put trays straight back in after eating, before you get distracted.

Eating and drinking

Take trays out for anything except plain water. Tea, zobo and soft drinks can stain trays and trap sugar against teeth. Brush or at least rinse before putting trays back in.

Pack a small case and a travel brush in your bag so lunch at work or school is easy.

Cleaning

Rinse trays in cool water every morning and evening and brush them gently with a soft brush. Once a week, soak them in cleaning crystals. Never use hot water; it can warp them.

Fasting

Many patients keep trays in through the fast and take them out to eat at sunset and before dawn. Tell us when Ramadan is coming and we will plan your sets and visits around it.

Travel and lost trays

Take your current and previous set when you travel. If you lose a tray, wear your previous set and message us. We will tell you whether to move on to the next set or order a replacement.
