Packing tips

Packing so it arrives in one piece

A parcel on a bike meets potholes, rain and the odd speed bump. Ten minutes of packing saves a lot of apologising.

Choose the right box

Use a strong box only a little bigger than the item. Too big and things slide; too small and corners split. Old boxes are fine if they are dry and firm.

Fill the gaps

Wrap each item and fill empty space with paper, cloth or bubble wrap until nothing moves when you shake it. Shoes travel well in their own box inside a second one.

Beat the rain

Put clothes, fabric and documents in a plastic bag first. Rainy season showers in Abuja can arrive in minutes, and riders cover parcels but cannot promise a dry ride.

Label clearly

Write the receiver's name, phone and a landmark on the box: "opposite the mosque, blue gate" helps more than a plot number. Tape over the label so it does not smudge.
