IVF, explained slowly and honestly
In vitro fertilisation brings eggs and sperm together in our laboratory, then places an embryo in the womb. It is a bigger step, so we explain every stage, every visit and every fee before you decide.
Our IVF team works as one, around your calendar. (Example image.)
In plain words
IVF begins with preparation: medicines prescribed by your doctor encourage the ovaries to grow several eggs, and we follow them with scans. When the time is right, the eggs are collected under light sedation in a short procedure in our private suite.
On the same day, the male partner's sample is prepared in our laboratory, and our embryologist brings eggs and sperm together. Over the next few days we watch how embryos develop and call you each morning with an update.
A few days later, one embryo is placed in the womb in a short, gentle procedure. Any other suitable embryos can be frozen and stored. Then come the waiting weeks, with a nurse beside you, and a set date for your test.
It may be suggested when
- Tubes are blocked or damaged
- Sperm results are low, where a specialised technique may help
- Other treatments have not worked
- Fertility preservation using embryos
Only your doctor can say whether it suits you, after a conversation and the right tests. We never promise outcomes.

Questions people ask
Is egg collection painful?
You are lightly sedated, so most women remember little of it. Some cramping afterwards is common, and we give you clear aftercare notes.
Can we spread the cost?
Yes. Most IVF plans can be paid as a deposit and then three or six monthly payments. Use the cost planner for an example.
How many embryos are transferred?
Usually one, which is safest for you. Your doctor will discuss this with you during the plan meeting.
What happens to embryos we do not use?
With your written consent, suitable embryos can be frozen and stored. We write to you every year to confirm your wishes.
