A couples' assessment looks at both of you, kindly
Most journeys at Novacare begin here: a set of simple tests for both partners, planned around your cycle, followed by an unhurried meeting to talk about what the results mean.

In plain words
An assessment is a careful look at the things that most often affect fertility, for both partners at the same time. For the woman, that usually means blood tests on set days of the cycle and a gentle ultrasound scan of the womb and ovaries. For the man, it means a semen analysis in a private room, and a short chat with the doctor.
If your history suggests it, we may also suggest a test of tube health, which is done on a separate morning with a nurse beside you throughout. Nothing happens without being explained first.
When every result is in, you meet your doctor for the plan meeting. You leave with a written summary and the options that may suit you, including simpler steps, and the honest limits of each.
It may be suggested when
- You have been trying for a year or more, or six months if the woman is over 35
- Cycles are irregular or very painful
- You simply want to understand your fertility better
- You have earlier results and would like a full picture

Questions people ask
Do both partners need to come?
Ideally yes, for the plan meeting at least. If one partner works away, the plan meeting can happen by video.
Will my HMO cover this?
Many HMO plans cover consultations and some blood tests. Bring your card and our desk will check while you wait.
How soon do results come?
Blood test results take one to two days, and semen analysis takes three working days. Your nurse calls you before the plan meeting.
What if a result is worrying?
Your doctor will explain what it means, and what it does not mean, in person. A counsellor is available the same day if you would like.
