IUI: a gentle first treatment for some couples
Intrauterine insemination places carefully prepared sperm into the womb at the most fertile point in your cycle. It is a short visit, with no anaesthetic, and it may be suggested after an assessment.
Most IUI visits take under 30 minutes. (Example image.)
In plain words
IUI is one of the simpler fertility treatments. We follow your cycle with scans to find the right moment, sometimes with gentle medicines prescribed by your doctor to support ovulation. On the day, the male partner gives a sample, which our laboratory prepares to select the most active sperm.
The prepared sample is then placed into the womb using a thin, soft tube. Most women describe it as similar to a smear test. You rest for a few minutes and then go home.
Your doctor may suggest IUI when tubes are open and sperm results are within a certain range. It is not suitable for everyone, and your doctor will explain why it may or may not fit your situation.
It may be suggested when
- The assessment shows open tubes
- Ovulation is irregular and can be supported
- Mild sperm concerns that preparation may help with
- Using donor sperm, after counselling
Only your doctor can say whether it suits you, after a conversation and the right tests. We never promise outcomes.

Questions people ask
Does IUI hurt?
Most women feel mild discomfort, similar to a smear test, for a minute or two. You can ask us to pause at any time.
How many cycles might we try?
That is a personal decision made with your doctor after each cycle. We review what we learnt every time.
Can I work on the day?
Yes. Most people go back to their normal day, though some prefer to rest. Both are fine.
Is a sample produced at the centre?
Yes, in a private room with a separate entrance. If that is difficult, talk to your nurse about other options.
Talk it through with a doctor
Book a first conversation, in person or by video. We will explain whether IUI may suit you, honestly and without pressure.
