Room 01

The first weeks at home

The first weeks are a mix of joy and very little sleep. Your baby will feed every two to three hours, day and night, and that is normal. Keep a simple note of feeds and nappies for the first two weeks, because your nurse will ask.

If you are a Meridian member, add your baby to your plan within 30 days of birth. Cover starts from the day they were born, and the newborn check is included.

Vaccines in the first year

Vaccines on the national schedule start at birth and continue at 6, 10 and 14 weeks, then at 9 months. Every network clinic gives them, and your member area shows which are due.

Bring the vaccine card to every visit, even if you think it is not needed.

A mild fever or a sore leg after a vaccine is common. If the fever is high or your baby is very unsettled, call the nurse line.

Room 03

Sleep and feeding

Babies sleep safest on their back, in their own space, with nothing loose around them. In the hot months, a light cotton layer is enough, and a fan in the room helps.

Breastfeeding support is free at our maternity partners. If you are using formula, ask the nurse about safe preparation, especially when water supply is uncertain.

Room 04

When to call a doctor

Call the nurse line or book a video consultation if your baby has a fever, is feeding much less than usual, has fewer wet nappies, or seems unusually sleepy. Go straight to a hospital if your baby has trouble breathing, a fit, or a fever under three months old.

You know your child best. If you are worried, call. That is what we are here for.

Room 05

Looking after yourself

Your own six week check is covered on Silver, Gold and Family. It is a good time to talk about how you are sleeping, eating and feeling. Low mood after birth is common and treatable, and you can speak to a Meridian doctor in private.
