Before the July rains: a flood checklist
Most of the flood claims we see happen in a handful of weeks. A few hours of preparation in June saves a great deal of heartache in July.
Clear the drains you can reach
Blocked gutters and drains cause more home flood claims than rivers do. Clear the gutter outside your gate and the drains in your compound in early June, and again after the first heavy rain.
If your estate has a residents' association, ask when the main drains were last cleared. Many associations organise a June clean-up.
Lift what matters
Put electronics, documents and stock on shelves at least a metre off the floor. Keep certificates, title documents and policy papers in a sealed plastic box upstairs.
Take photos of each room and your valuables now. If you need to claim, photos of how things looked before help a great deal.
Plan your car's night
If your street floods, park on higher ground during heavy rain warnings. Driving through deep water can damage the engine in seconds.
Comprehensive motor cover with Bulwark includes flood damage. Third party cover does not.
After a flood
Keep everyone safe first. Switch off power at the mains if water has reached sockets. Then take photos before you clean up, and call or message us.
We assess every claim against your policy terms. Damage from a sudden flood is usually covered; damage from slow leaks and damp usually is not.
