Case study
A solar borehole for 1,400 pupils
A public primary school in Kumbotso relied on a hand-dug well that dried up every March. Pupils carried water from home. We built a solar borehole with two tap stands and a hand wash line.
Example project figures for this demo.
The challenge
Basement rock with water only in deep fractures. The old well was 18 m and the water table dropped below it each dry season. No reliable grid power and fuel theft at the previous pump.
What we built
A resistivity survey found a fracture zone at 70 to 95 m behind the classroom block. We drilled with a down the hole hammer to 96 m, fitted a 2 hp solar pump with 16 panels on a steel frame and two 5,000 litre tanks on a 4 m stand.
The result
Water every school day since handover, through the end of harmattan. Absences on water carrying days dropped and the school opened a vegetable garden watered from the overflow.
