Water treatment
Borehole water in Kano is often hard, iron rich or high in fluoride. We test it in a lab first, then build only the treatment your water needs.
Common problems
What is in Kano borehole water
The signs most clients notice, and what is usually behind them.
Brown or orange water
Dissolved iron turns brown in air, stains tanks and tiles and tastes metallic.
Scale and white crust
Hard water from calcium and magnesium blocks heaters and shower heads.
Fluoride
Some basement rock areas carry fluoride above safe limits, which only a lab test shows.
Cloudy water
Fine sand or silt from a poorly screened borehole.
Bacteria
Nearby soakaways can contaminate shallow or badly sealed boreholes.
Smell
Hydrogen sulphide gives a rotten egg smell, removed by aeration and carbon.

Each stage removes one problem
A typical home plant has four or five stages in a row, fitted beside the tank stand.
- Stage 1
Sediment filter
Catches sand and silt down to 20 microns.
- Stage 2
Iron removal
Oxidising media turns dissolved iron into particles and traps them, backwashed automatically.
- Stage 3
Softener
Ion exchange removes hardness. Regenerated with salt every few days.
- Stage 4
Carbon filter
Removes smell, taste and some organic chemicals.
- Stage 5
UV lamp
Disinfects water on its way to the kitchen tap.

A sample from your borehole goes to a partner lab in Kano for 14 tests. You get the report, our recommendation and a fixed price, usually within four working days.

Sediment cartridges every 3 to 6 months, iron media every 3 to 5 years, UV lamps yearly.
Only slightly. For drinking we often fit a carbon or reverse osmosis tap at the kitchen.
