Catalogue / Essays
Twenty essays written between November and March, on dust, distance, family and the north as home.
The story
Written over one harmattan, these twenty essays move between Enugu and Kaduna, between a mother's kitchen and a borrowed flat, between the language of home and the language of the street. Funny, tender and sharp about what it means to choose a city.
Edited by the Quillstone editorial team over eighteen months, with a cover designed in our Barnawa studio. All books, authors and quotes on this site are invented for this demo.
From the first essay
Dust arrives in Kaduna the way relatives arrive in December: all at once, without warning, and determined to stay until the end of February. I learned to keep a cloth by the window and a smile by the door.

In the reading room
I read it in two sittings and then made my sister read it so I had someone to talk to.
Quiet, precise and devastating in the last forty pages.
