Catalogue / Novel
Three generations of women at the old dye pits, a debt that will not stay buried, and a daughter who wants out.
The story
In the old city of Kano, the dye pits at Kofar Mata have been worked by the same families for centuries. Amina is the first girl in hers who wants nothing to do with them. When her grandmother dies owing money to the wrong man, Amina has one dyeing season to clear the debt, and to decide whether leaving is the same as escaping.
Edited by the Quillstone editorial team over eighteen months, with a cover designed in our Barnawa studio. All books, authors and quotes on this site are invented for this demo.
The first pages
The water in the pit was the colour of a bruise that had not decided whether to heal. Amina's grandmother said you could read a family's fortune in it, if you knew how to look. Amina had decided long ago that she did not want to know how to look.

In the reading room
I read it in two sittings and then made my sister read it so I had someone to talk to.
Quiet, precise and devastating in the last forty pages.
