Gold: plan value. Rose: money paid in.

The mixes
What steady, balanced and growth mean
| Mix | Main funds | Example rate | Typical worst year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steady | Money Market, Fixed Income | 14.0% | Small rise |
| Balanced | Balanced Fund | 16.5% | About 5% down |
| Growth | Equity Fund | 19.0% | About 20% down |
Three rules of thumb
Plans fail less from poor returns than from stopping. A modest amount, every month, for long enough, usually beats a large sum invested late.
- Start the month you get paid, not at the end
- Raise the monthly amount whenever your salary rises
- Move to steadier funds as the goal gets close
