The material

Crushed stone base is not one size. It is a blend that runs smoothly from 40 mm stone down to dust, so the small pieces fill the gaps between the large ones and the whole layer becomes almost as hard as rock once it is rolled.

It sits on a compacted laterite subgrade and under asphalt, interlocking pavers or a concrete slab. Done properly it stops the potholes and soft spots that appear after the first rainy season.

For estate roads we work with the contractor on a trial strip first, rolling a few metres and checking density, so the main job is right from the first truck.

Questions

Asked at the weighbridge

How much base for my driveway?

A 60 square metre driveway at 150 mm takes about 20 tonnes once compacted, which is one 20-tonne tipper. The calculator does the sum.

Can I spread it by hand?

Yes for small jobs, but it must be compacted with a plate or roller in layers no thicker than 150 mm.

Should it be wet when rolled?

Damp, not wet. Our drivers can bring a water bowser for big jobs on request.

What goes under it?

Usually a compacted laterite subgrade. If the ground is soft, a layer of boulders first.
