Quarry dust

The fine stone left by crushing, from 5 mm down to powder. Block makers across Kano use it with sharp sand for harder, squarer blocks.

The material

Quarry dust used to be the part of the pile nobody wanted. Now it is one of our busiest lines, because block makers found that a dust and sharp sand mix gives a denser block that breaks less on the way to site.

It is not a full replacement for sand in concrete. Its very fine particles soak up water and cement, so we recommend it for blocks, paver bedding and backfill, not for structural slabs.

In the rainy season the dust holds water, and a damp tonne contains less stone than a dry one. We price by weight on our bridge, so ask the dispatcher about moisture if you are measuring by volume.

Where it goes

The jobs our customers use it for most often.

  1. Six and nine-inch blocks

Mix about two parts dust to one part sharp sand, three bags of cement per hundred six-inch blocks, as an example.

  2. Interlocking paver bedding

A 30 mm screeded layer under pavers, compacted with a plate.

  3. Pipe bedding and backfill

Around water and drainage pipes in trenches.

  4. Floor screed fill

For non-structural fills under tiles, with care.

Questions

Asked at the weighbridge

Can I use only quarry dust for blocks?

Some moulders do, but the blocks are harder to cure evenly. A blend with sharp sand is more forgiving.

Why is quarry dust so cheap?

It comes out of the crusher whatever we make. The price covers loading and testing, not the stone.

Do you deliver dust on the same truck as chippings?

Not mixed in one bed. A trailer can carry two materials only if they are separated by a board, which some drivers do on request.

Is it safe to breathe?

Fine stone dust should not be breathed in. Wet the pile lightly before mixing and give your workers dust masks.
