Spine clinic
Back and neck care that starts gently
Most back pain improves without surgery. Our spine clinic brings a spine surgeon, a pain specialist and physiotherapists together, so you get the right treatment in the right order, and an operation only when it is likely to help.
What we treat
Conditions this clinic looks after
Sciatica
Leg pain from an irritated nerve in the lower back, often from a disc.
Spinal stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal causing leg pain on walking.
Neck pain and arm pain
Trapped nerves in the neck causing arm pain, numbness or weakness.
Long-standing back pain
Pain lasting months, managed with our six week programme.
Your options
From gentlest to most involved
We discuss every option, including doing nothing for now. The right choice depends on your symptoms, your scans and your life.
Back pain programme
Six weeks of assessment, physiotherapy, education and a home plan, in small groups or one to one.
Nerve root injection
An image guided injection to calm an irritated nerve and allow rehabilitation.
Decompression
Surgery to free a trapped nerve, usually through a small incision.
Fusion
Joining two vertebrae for instability, used only for specific problems.
Recovery
What recovery usually looks like
- Days 1 to 7
Walking from day one
Walking is encouraged from the first day. Leg pain from a trapped nerve often eases early, while back soreness from the operation settles over weeks.
Focus: Short walks every hour, log rolling in bed, wound care.
- Weeks 1 to 6
Little and often
Avoid long sitting, heavy lifting and bending. Walk a little further each day.
Focus: Walking programme, gentle core exercises.
- Weeks 6 to 12
Back to work
Many desk workers return in this window. Physical jobs may need a phased return.
Focus: Core strength, posture, longer walks.
- Months 3 to 6
Rebuilding
Most daily activities resume. Some numbness can take months to improve, and sometimes stays.
Focus: Gym or pool based strength work.
On the day
What happens on the day of surgery
- Morning
Arrive fasting. You meet the surgeon and anaesthetist again and ask any last questions.
- Theatre
Surgery under general anaesthetic usually takes one to two hours.
- Surgery
You walk with a nurse on the same day or the next morning.
- Afterwards
Most people go home after one to three nights, with a walking plan.

Questions
Asked in this clinic
Should I rest in bed?
Usually not. Gentle movement and walking help most back pain settle. Bed rest for more than a day or two tends to slow recovery.
When is back pain an emergency?
New numbness around the groin or bottom, problems passing urine or controlling the bowel, or rapidly weakening legs. Go to the nearest emergency department straight away.
Do I need an MRI?
Not always. Many people improve before a scan would change anything. The consultant will advise when imaging is likely to help.
