A short glossary
Form M
The import declaration opened with your bank before shipping. It allows foreign exchange for the goods.
PAAR
Pre-arrival assessment report. Customs reviews the documents and sets the duty.
CIF and FOB
FOB is the goods at the origin port. CIF adds freight and insurance, and is the customs value.
Demurrage
A daily charge from the shipping line when a container is kept beyond free days.
Bill of lading
The shipping line's receipt for the goods, and proof of who owns them.
Terminal delivery order
Permission from the line to collect the container from the terminal.

How early should Form M be opened?
Before your supplier ships. Goods that arrive without Form M can face delays and penalties.
Can I clear goods myself?
Only a licensed customs broker can file entries. You can still follow every step with us.
What happens if documents do not match?
Customs may hold the cargo for a fuller check. We review your papers before arrival to avoid this.
What is demurrage and how do I avoid it?
It is the line's daily charge after free days. Filing the PAAR before arrival is the best way to avoid it.
Do I need a certificate of origin?
It helps on all goods and is required for any preference on goods made in West Africa.
How do I pay duty?
Through your bank into the customs account. We prepare the entry and send you the receipt.
Can you handle regulated goods like food and cosmetics?
Yes, once the product is registered. We work with consultants who handle registration.
How do I get the container deposit back?
We return the empty container to the depot and chase the refund. It usually takes four to eight weeks.
