The cover story

A site plan you can trust, in two days, not two weeks

Arit, survey lead

A ground survey of a 20 hectare estate in Akpabuyo can take a team of three a fortnight, with machetes, ranging poles and a lot of patience. A drone flight with ground control points takes a morning. The processed map is ready in two days, and every plot, footpath and drainage line is in the same measured image.

That is why developers, estate agents, farm owners and the state's contractors now start with a flight. The map does not replace a licensed surveyor's signature. It gives them, and you, a much better picture to work from.

We fly at 80 to 120 metres, with 75 percent overlap, and set at least five ground control points measured with survey grade GPS. The result is an orthomosaic accurate to about 3 centimetres, a terrain model and, if you want it, contours and volumes.

And because the camera is already up there, most clients take the stills and video too.

We used to walk the boundary twice and still argue about it. Now we open the map on a laptop at the site office and point.
