About the work
Musa Dankaro came from Kano to teach painting in Ibadan in 1998 and kept walking up to the Agodi hills in the evening. This canvas is one of eleven he made between 2014 and 2018 from the same spot, each at the moment the sun reaches the ridge.
The hills are laid down as bands of colour, painted one over another while the paint was still wet, and the trees are added last with the end of a brush. The green band near the bottom is the gardens, which he could see from his classroom window.
How big is it?
Drawn to scale beside a visitor 1.7 metres tall. The work measures 100 x 140 cm and hangs with its centre 1.5 metres from the floor, the height of most people's eyes.
The figure is a guide only.
