Painting outside in the rainy season

Between May and September, Enugu can see a dry morning turn into a downpour by two o’clock. Exterior paint needs dry walls and a few dry hours. Here is how we plan around the weather.

Dry walls first

Paint will not bond to a damp wall. After heavy rain, plaster can stay wet inside for two days. We test with a moisture meter before we start and wait if we must.

Mould and algae grow fast in the rains. We wash and treat walls with a fungicide a few days before painting.

Moisture test

We paint only when the meter reads under 16 percent.

Morning starts

In the rainy season our exterior crews start at 7am and stop painting by 1pm, so fresh paint has the driest hours to set. Afternoons go to preparation and interior work.

Rainy season day

7am to 1pm painting. 1pm to 5pm preparation and interiors.

Protecting fresh paint

If rain threatens, we stop early and cover fresh sections with sheeting. Most exterior paints are rain safe after about two hours. Rain on wet paint leaves streaks we will have to sand back and repaint at our cost.

If rain spoils our paint, we repaint at our cost.

Or wait for the dry season

For a full house exterior, the dry season from November is still best. Book in October and you will be near the front of the queue.

Book early

Dry season slots fill by mid November.

In short

  • Walls must be dry inside, not just on the surface
  • Treat mould before painting
  • Paint in the mornings, prepare in the afternoons
  • Book big exteriors for the dry season
