Colours that survive the harmattan
From November to February a fine red brown dust settles on everything in Enugu. Some colours hide it beautifully. Others show every fingerprint. Here is what fifteen dry seasons have taught us.
Brilliant white is the hardest
Pure white shows harmattan dust within a week, especially low on walls and around switches. It also looks cold and blue in the soft dry season light.
We nearly always suggest a warm white instead, like Palm Wine White. It reads as white, but the touch of warmth hides the dust.
Mid tones are forgiving
Sand, sage and soft clay colours hide dust and marks best of all. They are also calm in strong sun. Harmattan Sand and Ekulu Sage are our most painted colours for corridors and stairwells.
Go dark below, light above
If you love a dark colour, use it below a dado rail or on a single wall away from the door. Dark colours show pale dust, so keep them away from windows and entrances.
Charcoal trims and doors hide fingerprints and make the walls look fresher.
Choose a washable finish
Whatever colour you choose, a washable silk or satin lets you wipe the dust off with a damp cloth. Matt finishes look rich but need more care.
Warm white, mid tones and a washable finish: the harmattan formula.
In short
- Avoid brilliant white in busy rooms
- Mid tones like sand and sage hide dust best
- Keep dark colours away from doors and windows
- Use silk or satin where walls get touched
