What your water might be telling you
Signs at the tap often point to a likely cause, but only a test confirms it. These notes are a starting point, not a diagnosis.
Find the right testOrange stains in the bath
Likely: Iron. Common in Asaba boreholes. Usually removed with an oxidising iron filter.
Kettle full of white scale
Likely: Hardness. Calcium and magnesium. A softener or a scale inhibitor helps.
Water smells of rotten eggs
Likely: Hydrogen sulphide. Often from deep boreholes. Aeration and carbon filters help.
Tank water tastes flat or green
Likely: Algae and germs. Clean the tank, then test for bacteria before drinking.
Salty or bitter taste
Likely: High dissolved solids. Reverse osmosis is the usual answer for drinking water.
Cloudy after rain
Likely: Turbidity. Sediment filters and a settling tank make a big difference.
