Chapter IIIGeorge

George for traditional marriages.

In Akwa Ibom and across the south, the George double wrapper is the cloth of the bride and her mother. We keep it in both Indian George and silk George.

Rolls of patterned cloth in rich colours
  • Indian George: firm, embroidered, with sequin or stone borders. Holds its shape when tied.
  • Silk George: softer with a gold thread check that catches the light in photos.
  • Sizes: six yards for a double wrapper, or three yards for a single.
  • Matching: we pair each George with a lace and a gele so the outfit is settled in one visit.

Many brides choose two Georges: one for the morning ceremony and one for the evening reception.

Chapter VIQuestions

Wrapper questions.

Can you hold a George while my family decides?

Yes, for 48 hours from the swatch wall, or seven days with a 20% deposit.

How do I know the gold thread is good?

We let you take the George to the door. Good gold thread stays bright in daylight and does not look green or brassy.

Is adire colour fast?

Indigo releases a little colour in the first two washes. Wash it alone in cold water and it settles.

Do you tie gele?

We do not tie gele in the shop, but we can recommend gele stylists in Uyo for your day.

Planning a traditional marriage?

Bring your mother, your list and an hour. We will set the George, lace and gele out together.
