Room two · Lace

Lace that keeps its shape all day.

Our middle room stays cool and dim for a reason: lace hates sun and damp. We keep cord, French, guipure, beaded and net lace here, folded in tissue and sold in five yard pieces.

Chapter IIIKinds of lace

Five laces, five moods.

Cord lace

A raised cord stitched onto net. Firm, bold and forgiving for first time lace wearers. The usual choice for mothers of the day.

From ₦48,000

French lace

Fine thread on soft net, often with small stones. Lighter, more fluid, and best for fitted gowns.

From ₦65,000

Guipure

No net at all: the motifs join each other. Holds a crisp shape for peplums and structured sleeves.

From ₦58,000

Beaded lace

Hand finished beads and sequins on lace. Heavy, slow to sew and unforgettable at a traditional marriage.

From ₦165,000

Net and voile lace

Embroidered net or voile. Airy and cool for long outdoor ceremonies in the dry season.

From ₦65,000

Chapter IVChecking lace

Six checks before you pay for lace.

We do these with you at the counter. Good lace passes all six.

  1. Hold it to the door. The net should be even, with no thin patches.
  2. Pull a corner gently. Good cord does not lift away from the net.
  3. Count the stones. Loose stones in the fold mean loose stones on the day.
  4. Look at the edge. A scalloped border should run the full length.
  5. Check both ends. Colour should match from the first yard to the last.
  6. Smell it. A damp smell means it was stored badly. Ours is folded with dry tissue.

Chapter VIQuestions

Lace questions we hear every week.

Can I buy two and a half yards of lace?

Most lace is sold in five yard pieces because the pattern runs across the full length. For cord lace we can sometimes split a piece between two customers buying at the same time.

Which lace is best for a burial or remembrance service?

Families often choose cord lace in white, black, wine or navy. It is dignified, washes well and suits all ages. We can help you plan shares for the family.

Does lace fade?

Lace colour is stable, but sun yellows white net over time. Store it folded in a cotton bag, away from light.

Do you sell matching gele?

Yes. We keep aso-oke and George gele in colours that sit well with our lace. Ask us to match one from the swatch wall.

Choosing lace for a big day?

Book a quiet half hour in the lace room. We will lay out your shortlist in daylight.
