The story of the shoot

One night, one street, one take

Okumagba Nights is a single continuous shot down one street, lit with hired neon tubes, practical shop lights and two generators hidden in a parked bus. The artiste walks, the street dances around her, and the camera never cuts.

We rehearsed for two evenings with forty dancers and local traders, then shot from 9pm to 3am. Take eleven is the one you see. We paid every shop on the street for the night and left it cleaner than we found it.

The grade pushes the neon ruby and keeps skin tones warm and true, which is harder than it sounds under coloured light.

How it came together

Concept

One shot or nothing

The artiste wanted the song to feel like walking home with friends. One take was the only honest way to film it.

Rehearsal

Two evenings

Forty dancers, a marked route, and a gimbal operator who walked it thirty times.

Night

Eleven takes

From 9pm to 3am, with a hot meal at midnight and the street lit by our own power.

Grade

Ruby neon, true skin

Three days of grading so the neon glows and every face still looks like itself.

Ember made my street look like the inside of my head. Nobody believed it was one take until we showed them the bus.

Yes. Our choreographer casts from a pool of trained dancers in Warri and Sapele.

Can we shoot on a public street?

Yes, with a permit from the local council and agreement from the businesses on the street. We arrange both.
