How to measure
Walls are rarely square. Two minutes with a tape saves a return trip.
Measure wall to wall at the longest point, in metres.
Do the same across the room. For L shapes, split into two rectangles.
Subtract fixed units, a shower tray or a kitchen island footprint.
10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal, herringbone or many cuts.
Wastage guide
Cuts at walls, door frames and breakages in transport all use tiles.
| Layout | Add | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Straight lay, small room | 5% | Bathrooms under 6 sqm with few cuts |
| Straight lay | 10% | Most rooms, the safe default |
| Brick bond or offset | 10 to 12% | Plank tiles at a third offset |
| Diagonal | 15% | Every edge tile is cut |
| Herringbone | 15 to 20% | Plank tiles only, ask a consultant |
Batch matters
Tiles from different production runs can differ in shade. Buy every box for a room together, and keep one box spare with its batch code for future repairs.
