Chair stretches and slow dancing
Twice a week a visiting physiotherapist leads chair stretches, and on Wednesdays there is gentle dancing to highlife. Nobody has to stand, and everybody laughs.
Wednesday drive
An hour along the waterfront in our minibus, with roasted corn on the way back.
Saturday market
A small group to the market with a carer each, for fabric, fruit and conversation.
Carnival lights
In December, an evening drive to see the carnival lights in town.
Your own church
The Sunday minibus takes residents to their own churches in town.
“I had not sung since my husband died. Now I sing alto in the Tuesday choir and they let me choose the hymns.”
Who runs the activities?
Our activities coordinator, Auntie Eno, with carers, volunteers from local churches and visiting musicians.
Can families join in?
Yes, especially on Saturdays and Sunday evenings.
What if I do not like groups?
Plenty of residents do not. Carers bring books, radios and puzzles to rooms, and someone always has time to talk.
Do outings cost extra?
The minibus is included. Bring a little money for the market if you like.
Cooked here, every day, the Calabar way.
Three meals a day from our own kitchen, with softer and lower-salt versions always on offer.
Mama Affiong has cooked for Ashgrove for eleven years. She shops at the market twice a week and cooks the soups residents grew up with.
