What to pack for a first night away
A first night away is a big step. The right bag helps more than you would think. Here is what our counsellors wish every child brought, and what they wish stayed at home.

The essentials
A sleeping bag or a light blanket, a pillow, a torch with fresh batteries, pyjamas, a towel, wash things and clothes for two days. Closed shoes for the trail and slippers for the bunk room.
Label everything
Thirty identical water bottles look very alike at 7am. Write your child’s name on everything with a marker, including the torch.
For the rain
Even in dry season, Calabar can surprise you. A rain poncho and a plastic bag for wet clothes save a lot of tears.
A comfort item
A small soft toy or a photo from home is welcome at any age. Nobody laughs; counsellors bring theirs too.
Leave at home
Phones, tablets, money, jewellery and sweets. We provide snacks, and the nurse keeps any medicines safe with your instructions. Phones can be handed to staff if your child travels with one.
