Chapter XVI

Engagement, 6 minute read

Choosing a ring without guessing her taste

Most people choosing an engagement ring are choosing for someone else. Here is how to get it right without spoiling the surprise.

Look at what she already wears

Gold or silver every day? Fine pieces or bold ones? The jewellery she chooses for herself tells you more than any guess. Take a photograph of her jewellery box if you can.

Ask her friends three questions

Does she like to be noticed or to be discreet? Does she work with her hands? Has she ever said anything about rings she likes? Friends usually know, and they keep secrets better than you think.

Pick the shape before the size

A round stone sparkles most. An oval looks larger for its weight. An emerald cut is calm and modern. Shape matters more to how a ring feels than an extra tenth of a carat.

Choose a setting for her life

A doctor or a chef may prefer a low setting that does not catch on gloves. A lawyer who talks with her hands may love a halo. Ask yourself where the ring will spend its days.

Leave room to change

We resize free for two years, and you can bring her back to change the setting before the wedding. The best surprise is one she can make her own.
