Taraba and Adamawa. The largest park in Nigeria, with montane forest, rivers and the highest ground in the country.

The place

Why we go

Gashaka Gumti is not an easy trip and we do not pretend it is. It is remote, the roads are hard and the walking is steep. In return you get forest that few Nigerians have seen, rivers you can drink from after filtering, and a silence that takes a day to get used to. We run it twice a year in small groups of no more than eight.

Getting there
Fly Lagos to Yola via Abuja, then about 6 hours by road
Best months
December to March; the park is mostly closed from July to October
Park size
About 6,400 square kilometres, the largest in the country
What you see
Forest primates, buffalo, river birds and rare montane forest
Where you stay
Chappal Trail Base and two fly camps on the expedition
Fitness
Good walking fitness; days of 5 to 7 hours on uneven ground

The rhythm

A day here, start to finish

  1. Morning

Up at 05:30, porridge and tea, walking by 06:30 before the heat.

  2. Midday

A long lunch by a river, feet in the water, a rest in hammocks.

  3. Afternoon

Shorter walks, or time at camp with the ranger teaching tracks and calls.

  4. Evening

Early supper, early night. Generator from 6pm to midnight at the base, none at the fly camps.

What about phone signal

There is almost none inside the park. Our guides carry a satellite messenger and we send home updates each evening.
