The new hang: five Edo painters in the stair hall
By the house team. Example article for this demo.
Every season the programme committee chooses a new hang for the stair hall. This autumn it is five painters under forty, all working in Benin City, all shown at Goldleaf for the first time.
Why the stair hall
It is the one space every member passes through, morning and night. A painting there is seen hundreds of times a week, which is more than most galleries can promise.
The five
Two painters work in oil on large canvases, one in ink on handmade paper, one in collage with old market receipts, and one in bronze dust on board, a nod to the city’s casting tradition. All are invented for this demo.
Buying and borrowing
The club buys one work each season for the permanent collection. Members can ask the house manager to introduce them to the artists, and every sale goes directly to the painter.
Tours
Saturday morning tours of the collection run at 10am with the house manager. Book at reception.
