Rainy season roads: our listeners' map of the worst floods

For three weeks Morning Fire listeners sent us traffic reports after every heavy rain. We counted them up. Here is where the water gathers, and the ways round it.

How we did it

Between 29 September and 17 October, listeners sent 1,240 traffic reports to Morning Fire and The Rush. The newsroom tagged every report that mentioned flooding by road and time. Example figures for this demo.

The worst five

Trans Amadi near the slaughter came top, with flooding reported after almost every heavy rain. Next were parts of Ikwerre Road near Rumuokoro, the D-Line junction, sections of Aba Road near Waterlines, and the Eleme junction service lane.

Most flooding cleared within two hours of the rain stopping, but Trans Amadi often stayed under water until the next morning.

The ways round

For Trans Amadi, listeners suggest going through Woji or Rumuibekwe. For Rumuokoro, the old Rumuokoro road behind the market moves when the main road does not. Never drive into water you cannot see the bottom of.

Tell us more

We will keep counting until the rains end. Send traffic reports as voice notes during Morning Fire and The Rush, only when you are safely parked or a passenger.

In short

  • Trans Amadi floods most often
  • Most floods clear within two hours
  • Woji and Rumuibekwe for Trans Amadi
  • Never drive into deep water
