The Garden City half marathon: route, road closures and where to cheer

Five thousand runners, 21 kilometres and one very early start. Here is what Saturday means for runners, drivers and everyone in between. Example event for this demo.

A group of people dancing outdoors

The route

The race starts at 6am at the stadium on Elekahia Road, heads up Aba Road to Garrison, turns along Ikwerre Road and loops back through Old GRA before finishing at the stadium. The fastest runners should be back by 7:10am.

Water stations are every three kilometres, with first aid tents at Garrison, Mile 1 and the finish.

Roads that close

From 5am to 10am, Aba Road between the stadium and Garrison is closed to traffic. Ikwerre Road closes in stages from 6am and reopens behind the last runner. Old GRA streets on the route close from 6:30am to 9:30am.

Use Trans Amadi and the East West Road if you must drive across the city. Keke and okada riders are asked to stay off the route.

Where to cheer

The best spots are Garrison roundabout, where the route turns, and Forces Avenue in Old GRA, where the Firstlight outside broadcast van will be playing music from 6am. Bring water, a flag and your loudest voice.

Listen along

Tamuno Jack and the sports team will be on air from 5:30am with live updates from the route, interviews at the finish and the full results on Sports Arena on Monday.
