Grandparents in the classroom
For five days, more than sixty grandparents and elders joined lessons. They taught songs, told stories and corrected our pronunciation, gently and often.
Proverbs of the week
Each morning assembly began with a proverb in Ibibio or Efik, explained by a pupil. By Friday, the infants were quoting them back to their teachers.
Our children should know the songs their grandmothers sang, as well as the poems in their English books.
Crafts and cooking
Raffia weaving, wood carving and drumming filled the arts centre, and the dining hall served afang soup, edikang ikong and pepper soup all week.
Why it matters
An international school should open windows to the world. It should also keep the doors of home wide open. Heritage week is how we do both.
People and events in this story are examples for this demo.
